Recently, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) officially released the shortlist of 33 finalists for the 2026 WIPO Global Awards, selected from 1,300 applications across 126 countries. Two enterprises supported by BCAA — Beijing Phabuilder Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Phabuilder) and Botree Recycling Technology Co., Ltd. (Botree) — have been shortlisted in the Environment category for their outstanding innovation and robust intellectual property (IP) strategies, demonstrating the strong global competitiveness of China’s green technology sector in intellectual property and sustainable development.

The WIPO Global Awards, initiated by the WIPO, rank among the world’s most authoritative international awards for intellectual property and innovation. They recognize small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups that integrate innovation, creativity and high-standard IP strategies to drive business growth while delivering tangible social benefits. The selection criteria focus on commercial performance, IP portfolio development and positive social impact. All shortlisted companies gain automatic access to the official WIPO Global Awards community, with exclusive premium resources including introductions to international investors, specialized IP advisory services and global event promotion opportunities.
For this year’s Awards, only six enterprises worldwide were shortlisted in the Environment category, two of which are Chinese companies supported by BCAA. As the core implementing agency and strategic partner of the WIPO GREEN City Acceleration Project in China for green technology, BCAA launched targeted outreach, screening and tailored mentoring for high-quality enterprises within its ecosystem upon the opening of the 2026 WIPO Global Awards application cycle. It prioritized recommending enterprises with core technologies and comprehensive IP portfolios covering new energy recycling, bio-based materials, energy conservation and carbon reduction for global competition. The two shortlisted firms recommended by BCAA are industry benchmarks whose technological focus aligns closely with China’s "Dual Carbon" goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
1.Beijing Phabuilder Biotechnology Co., Ltd.｜Low-cost Microbial Bioplastics
Shortlist Category: Environment – Early Stage Enterprise
Focusing on synthetic biology and green biomanufacturing, Phabuilder leverages self-developed microbial technologies to mass-produce low-cost, fully biodegradable PHA bioplastics. It replaces traditional chemical manufacturing with bio-based production to address plastic pollution at the source. Spun off from technological research at Tsinghua University, the company has built China’s leading ten-thousand-ton PHA production line. Recognized as a Specialized, Refined, Unique and Innovative enterprise and a potential unicorn for its outstanding innovation capacity, Phabuilder relies on intellectual property to advance the industrialization and global expansion of bio-based materials.

Partnership with BCAA
Recommended by HongShan, Phabuilder won the 2nd BCAA Carbon Neutrality Pioneer Award in 2022 and joined the BCAA Carbon Neutral Technology Acceleration Platform thereafter. In 2025, BCAA nominated Phabuilder for the 2nd China Greentech IP Management Clinic (IPMC). Hosted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), supported by the Beijing Municipal Administration of Intellectual Property Rights and implemented by BCAA, the camp admitted 25 enterprises including Phabuilder. The company received systematic IP strategy guidance from top domestic and international IP specialists. Through five months of one-on-one consultations, group training and on-site field visits, a customized global intellectual property strategy was formulated for the enterprise.

2.Botree Recycling Technology Co., Ltd. – Lithium Battery Recycling
Shortlist Category: Environment – Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME)
Botree Recycling Technology specializes in the recycling and regeneration of critical new energy materials. Centered on high-efficiency lithium battery recovery and material regeneration technologies, it provides a full-industry-chain solution covering end-of-life battery collection, material purification and high-value reuse. The firm has launched projects in more than ten countries worldwide and serves multiple Fortune 500 energy and battery corporations. Attaching great importance to IP layout, Botree Recycling Technology has filed over 100 patents, more than 80% of which are invention patents. Its robust IP portfolio creates solid technical barriers and underpins its global commercial layout, delivering core support for the low-carbon circular development of the new energy industry.
